My bibliography... mostly marine geology, oceanography stuff.

Interests

For the last 10 years I have been using my background in Earth Science, Geology, and Oceanography, and my experience working on environmental education curriculum, to develop in-the-field education programs. My Earth Science/Geology/Oceanography specialty in was process geomorphology (the study of landscape and environment formation & evolution).

I have particular strengths in glacial geology, hydrology and sedimentology, field surveying & mapping, computer applications, including GIS, data analysis, remote sensing and visualizations, as well as science writing. I pride myself in my communication skills and I thoroughly enjoy working with teachers/educators and students. I have 6 years experience in teaching at the college level, including teacher-training workshops.

I love surfing!

I grew up in Malibu; lived my entire life within walking distance to the beach. Some great surf spots: Malibu, North County San Diego, Newport Beach, Santa Barbara, Santa Cruz. After College I worked in marine geology for the USGS... the water in the arctic (my study area) was a tad too frigid for me though. Well, in 1985 I moved to Rhode Island (the Ocean State) to study coastal geologyc and oceanographic process. I figured, hell, I've lived in and know the surf pretty well now. Why not take it all the way.....

Rhody was beautiful... but, I'd sold my boards before landing there, thinking... surf in New England? RIGHT!. Boy was I wrong. Just weeks after settling in Hurricane Gloria hit... Pumping 10 to 15 foot surf! Breaking cleanly on all manner of point and beach. Well that was it. I quickly bought boards! Spent the next few years scrambling for any and all surf. Winters were brutal! Wading through snow drifts to surf windchop and frenzied seas. Hurricanes were great. I wound up studying them so I could get access to the shore during EXTREME events when the rest of the population was evacuated. Got the longest ridee of my life on a little (shoulder high) pealer going left at Bonnet Shores Cove.

Well, enough surf.... NEVER! God I miss it! And here I am an oceanographer in Idaho?!
Go Figure.

Well Idaho is awesome.

Before coming to Moscow (ID), to the University, I lived in Ketchum/Sun Valley... you know, the ski... I mean SNOWBOARD area! You got it. Snowboarding has saved my soul! Like a frozen 3,000 foot wave. Only it doesn't chase you (luckily).

Plus, you can go back to that very spot each run and "schralp" that lip. So here I am, happy in the wild mountains, beauty abounds, no crowds, great people, great culture, though lacking diversity. I do miss surfing though!
Since coming to Idaho in 1992 I have been working on environmental education curriculum and strategies development. I lived in Ketchum/Sun Valley for 5 years. Great mountain for skiing and boarding. My view of the mountain inspired this simple sketch.

Elsewhere in the World..... Cozumel for Scuba Edventures!

Other recent excursions include a trip with fellow professors to Cozumel for an intensive week of scuba diving on an incredibly beautiful reef. Above is a picture of me treed in the mainland in Cancun.

Scuba stepping out.... water was like thick air. very warm down to 100+ ft. and oh so very clear.

Local brew... in Cozumel.

Then there's Panama.....

Another excursion was to Panama for a surf safari. The site is El Morro Negrito Surf Camp. This place is awesome. Warm water, beautiful weather, surf at numerous beach, reef and point breaks...

The Point at Morro Negrito.... A Brazilian bud gets barreled.

Throughout my career I have closely followed the development of personal computing platforms, programming, graphics and GIS, as well as the evolution of multimedia and appropriate use of technology in education. My further experience in computer systems includes software integration, data analysis and visualization, computer-aided drafting and design, image analysis and processing, 3D modeling, GIS-mapping, desktop publishing, and system and application software training.... I've been a Macintosh evangelist since its introduction. Give me a well integrated graphic computing platform and it'll be a mac! I do however, welcome the rest of the world's PCs to the real GUI world. Thanks to Windows and Win'95, Now I don't hesitate to work on another platform... But Macs still rule!

I've been a graphics arts fanatic since childhood and have done a lot of work helping others realize their visions. Some day I'll put together a web page of my work.... Here's a few samples.
